München-Giesing station, S-Bahn station in Obergiesing, Munich, Germany
München-Giesing station is a surface-level S-Bahn stop in the Obergiesing district of Munich, with three tracks at ground level. The original station building from the late 19th century still stands next to the platforms and is listed as an architectural heritage monument under Bavarian law.
The station opened on 10 October 1898, at a time when the area around it was still open fields and meadows, far from the original Giesing settlement. As the city grew outward over the following decades, the neighborhood built up around it and the stop became part of everyday life in the district.
The former station building now houses a cultural center and a restaurant, and the original structure with its late 19th-century details is still clearly visible. Walking through it, visitors can read the old layout of the rooms and the materials used in the original construction.
The station is at ground level, which makes it easy to reach for people with limited mobility. Those who want to take a closer look at the historic building will find it easier to do so outside the morning and evening rush hours.
When the station opened in 1898, it stood well outside the built-up city, surrounded by open countryside with no neighborhood around it yet. The monument protection status came almost 90 years later, in 1985, making it one of the few stations from that era to be officially recognized in this way.
