Schottmalhorn, Mountain summit in Bavaria, Germany
Schottmalhorn is a mountain in the Reiter Steinberge range that rises to 2045 meters with limestone rock formations visible throughout. Multiple marked hiking paths traverse its slopes, connecting different starting points in the surrounding area.
The mountain forms part of the Berchtesgaden Alps, a region that has served as a natural boundary between Germany and Austria since medieval times. This geographic position shaped how the surrounding area developed and how people crossed through it.
The summit cross serves as a landmark that guides hikers through the alpine landscape. The area attracts mountaineers who value and maintain traditional routes passed down through generations.
Hikers can reach the summit using two marked trails that start from Neuen Traunsteiner Hütte as a common base. The Steinberggasse route takes around three hours and is the more straightforward option for most visitors.
From the peak, hikers see a far-reaching view that includes Hohen Göll, Großen Priel, and the Dachstein range spread across the horizon. The vista also drops down to show the Hintersee valley far below.
