St. Ignaz, Church building in Mainz, Germany.
St. Ignaz is a church in Mainz with a red sandstone facade decorated with gray sandstone figures, including a statue of Saint Ignatius of Antioch at the entrance. Inside, a classicist organ case from 1774 sits above the main entrance, while the current pipe organ dates from 1837.
Construction of this church took place between 1763 and 1774, replacing an older structure that had been built into the Mainz city wall since 1200. The rebuilding reflected broader urban changes in the city.
The ceiling paintings depict scenes from the life of Saint Ignatius and were created by Johann Baptist Enderle. These artworks shape the interior experience and tell the story visually to visitors.
The church is accessed through the main entrance at the front, where the statue of Saint Ignatius draws attention. The ceiling paintings are best viewed from the center of the nave.
A crypt beneath the church holds the remains of clergy, parish members, and the original craftsmen who constructed the building. This underground chamber connects the builders with those who worshipped here.
