Hermann's Cave

Hermann's Cave extends through Devonian limestone formations in the Bode Valley, featuring numerous chambers with stalactites and stalagmites throughout its passages.

The cave was discovered during road construction in 1866, leading to immediate scientific interest due to extensive findings of Ice Age animal remains.

The cave demonstrates geological processes through its crystal chamber and ancient limestone pillar, which scientists date to approximately 8000 years old.

Visitors can only access the cave through guided tours that occur every 30 minutes and last approximately 50 minutes through the illuminated passages.

The cave contains an artificial lake with a constant temperature of 7 degrees Celsius, providing habitat for rare cave species including the grotto olm.
