Schönberg, Mountain summit in Ebringen, Germany
Schönberg is a mountain summit located south of Freiburg im Breisgau, between the villages of Ebringen and Schallstadt in the Hexental area. Its slopes are largely covered in forest, while the top opens up into more open terrain with clear views toward the Rhine plain.
Archaeological finds show that the area around the Schönberg was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Later peoples also left traces here, making use of the elevated position for observation and shelter.
The Schönberg is a popular destination for people from the surrounding villages, who walk up on weekends and holidays to take in the open views. On the summit, it is common to see families and groups of friends sitting together, often with a picnic.
Marked trails start from Ebringen and Schallstadt, giving visitors a choice of routes to the top depending on their pace and preference. The walk is suitable for most people in good physical condition, and the views are at their best on days without haze.
On a clear day, the summit offers a view over three countries at once: Germany, France, and Switzerland are all visible along the horizon. This is possible because the Rhine plain and the Vosges mountains on the French side lie just across the river.
