Schauspielhaus Bochum, Municipal theater company in Bochum, Germany
Schauspielhaus Bochum is a theater building at Königsallee 15 with several auditoriums and an open facade made of glass and concrete. The architecture connects a main stage with a chamber venue under a shared roof.
The original Apollo-Theater opened here in 1908 and was destroyed during the Second World War. Reconstruction on the old foundations took place in 1953 with a new architectural concept.
The venue takes its name from the German term for spoken drama and stages works in the language of the region. Ensemble members perform regularly in both halls and work under the direction of Johan Simons.
Performances take place during the season in both halls and ticket sales begin in late November. Visitors reach the entrance directly on Königsallee in the center of town.
A statue of actress Tana Schanzara stands opposite the entrance and recalls her five decades with the ensemble. She remained connected to the house until her death in 1991.
