Schwäbisches Donaumoos

Schwäbisches Donaumoos is a wetland in Bavaria that stretches across gentle, open landscapes marked by grasses, water surfaces, and river channels. The area consists of several connected zones with different habitats for plants and animals.

In the 19th century, sections of the winding Danube River were straightened, with the river engineering continuing until 1871 toward Passau. This reshaping of the river's course fundamentally changed the landscape's appearance.

The name reflects its origins as swampland, and local people take pride in their role protecting this habitat. You can see conservation groups actively maintaining the landscape and welcoming visitors to learn about the natural world.

Visitors can explore the area best by taking time and using the various viewpoints scattered throughout the region. Sturdy footwear is advisable, especially in wet weather, as many paths go through muddy or boggy sections.

The area is home to around 250 bird species and functions as Bavaria's largest natural flood water reservoir for the region. This dual role as habitat and protection system makes it a valuable asset for both nature and people.
