Schwäbisches Donaumoos, Wetland ecosystem in Bavaria, Germany
The Schwäbisches Donaumoos extends across 400 square kilometers, forming the largest uninhabited open landscape in Germany after Lüneburg Heath.
During the 19th century, sections of the meandering Danube River were straightened, with the complete rectification reaching Passau by 1871.
Local communities maintain traditional agricultural practices while participating in conservation efforts through landscape maintenance organizations and educational programs.
Visitors can observe wildlife from towers at Sophienried, Schurr-See in Gundelfingen, and Mooswaldsee in Günzburg throughout the nature reserve.
The floodplain functions as Bavaria's largest natural flood water reservoir and provides habitat for 250 bird species including White Storks and Eurasian Curlews.
