Burg Baldenau

Burg Baldenau is a castle ruin in Hundheim with a 25-meter high keep, thick walls, and an 8-meter deep well within its grounds. The inner courtyard still displays paved areas that reveal how the site once functioned as a residential complex.

Archbishop Balduin of Luxembourg built this castle between 1312 and 1324 to strengthen his authority over the Trier region against the Counts of Sponheim. The fortification served as part of a broader strategy to consolidate church power in the Hunsrück area.

The ruins appeared in several notable German films, including the drama Schinderhannes and Edgar Reitz's HEIMAT film series. Visitors recognize the castle by its distinctive silhouette, which has been part of regional visual culture for generations.

This castle connects to several walking and cycling routes, including the LandZeitTour dream loop and the third stage of the Hunsrück cycle route. Visitors thus have flexible options for reaching and exploring the site.

This is the only moated castle in the entire Hunsrück region, a distinction that underscores its importance as a defensive structure. Its position in the upper Dhron valley between Hundheim and Hinzerath gave it strategic control over the area.
