Burg Reichenberg

Burg Reichenberg is a medieval fortification standing on elevated ground in the Hasenbachtal region of Rhineland-Palatinate, featuring high flanking towers and a Mannerist shield wall. The complex includes a residential area with a hall whose ceiling is supported by cubic stone pillars.

The castle was commissioned in 1319 by Count Wilhelm von Katzenelnbogen and his son Wilhelm II as a defensive stronghold for the region. It served as an important fortification within the power structure of the time.

The castle displays late medieval building techniques through its preserved hall with a ceiling supported by cubic capitals. These architectural details reveal much about the craftsmanship traditions and wealth of the lords who lived here.

The castle remains under private ownership, but you can observe its exterior architecture and defensive elements from designated viewing points in Reichenberg. It is worth exploring the surroundings to find the best perspective on the fortification.

The northern flanking tower of the castle collapsed approximately four decades ago, fundamentally altering its original symmetrical layout. This damage is visible from many viewing angles and tells of the fragility of these ancient structures.
