Burg Drackenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Drackenstein, Germany.
Burg Drackenstein is a castle ruin located on the edge of Unterdrackenstein village in southern Baden-Württemberg at 658 meters elevation. The remains show a trapezoidal core structure with a partially filled moat on the southern side of the former fortification.
The fortress was controlled by the Lords of Westerstetten during the 15th century before being sold to Baron Kaspar Bernhard von Rechberg in 1589. Due to structural problems, it was demolished in 1679.
The castle site represents the medieval architecture and noble governance systems that shaped the development of Baden-Württemberg through the centuries.
The ruins are accessible through local hiking trails in the Göppingen district and located in a rural area that can be explored on foot. The site works well for hikers looking to explore the surrounding countryside along maintained paths.
After demolition in 1679, materials from the castle's moat were later reused for a sports field built on the grounds in 1935. This shows how the site underwent two distinct uses separated by centuries.
