Burg Frenz

Burg Frenz, Medieval castle in Inden, Germany.

Burg Frenz is a stone castle located in Inden in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Inde River. The ruins still contain portions of the southern outer bailey and show the fortified construction typical of medieval strongholds in this region.

The structure was first recorded in 1104 and was built by the von Frenz family as part of efforts to settle and control the Inden area. By the 14th century it had passed to the von Merode family, reflecting how estates often changed hands through family marriages and inheritances during medieval times.

The name comes from the von Frenz family who built it in medieval times. Today the stone walls and fortified layout still show what a noble stronghold looked like and how landowners of that era defended their territory.

The site remains private property and viewing from outside is possible but entering the grounds needs the owner's permission beforehand. The location near the river provides easy identification when visiting the area, though careful approach is necessary out of respect for private land.

The castle was abandoned by the von Merode family in 1826 and declined over the following decades until wartime destruction changed its fate entirely. Bombing damage in autumn 1944 hastened its collapse and today only scattered fragments remain from the original building.
