Burgruine Malsburg

Burgruine Malsburg, Medieval castle ruin in Hohenborn, Germany.

Description

Burgruine Malsburg is a castle ruin near Zierenberg that consists of preserved wall sections and a tower. The tower measures approximately 6.5 meters (21 feet) in diameter, and the remaining walls reveal the rectangular layout of the original main structure.

History

The castle was first documented in 1123 and gained importance during the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession in the 13th century. This conflict shaped regional history and underscored the fortress's strategic role in medieval power struggles.

Culture

The site served as the home of the von der Malsburg noble family, who held land and influence in this region during the Middle Ages. The ruins reflect their social standing through the castle's construction and prominent location on the hilltop.

Practical

The ruins sit on a forested basalt hilltop in the northern section of Habichtswald Nature Park. Reaching the site requires a short walk through woodland terrain, and the setting offers good views of the surrounding landscape from above.

Did you know?

The castle contains remnants of an original well system that reveals how carefully water supply was engineered in medieval times. This technical feature demonstrates the skill and knowledge of the builders who constructed the fortress.
