Burg Windhausen, Medieval castle ruins in Bad Grund, Germany
The castle remains include a 30-meter section of the ring wall measuring 1.2 meters thick and 6 meters high, along with fragments of the central tower.
First mentioned in 1134, the castle belonged to the Dukes of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, with Knight Werner von Berkefeld documented as its initial castellan.
The fortress holds significant medieval architectural elements and served as a burial site for the Koch family within the modified central tower during the 18th century.
The ruins sit between the Schwarzes Wasser and Schlungwasser rivers at 230 meters above sea level, offering free access to visitors throughout the year.
In 1365, the castle endured a siege by 13,000 troops of the Archbishop of Mainz, leading to substantial damage to its original structure.
