Burg Windhausen, Medieval castle ruins in Bad Grund, Germany

Burg Windhausen is a castle ruin in Bad Grund located in the Harz region, situated between two rivers. The remains include sections of the outer wall and fragments of the central tower that reflect medieval construction methods.

The fortress was first documented in 1134 as property of the Dukes of Brunswick-Grubenhagen. A major siege in 1365 by forces of the Archbishop of Mainz caused extensive damage that left lasting marks on its structure.

The fortress served as a burial site for the Koch family in the 18th century, with the central tower modified to accommodate this purpose. This repurposing shows how medieval structures adapted to new needs over time.

The ruins are freely accessible and situated in a valley setting between two rivers, making them easy to visit. The location is reachable by walking paths and suits visitors interested in exploring the surrounding landscape.

Knight Werner von Berkefeld was documented as the fortress's first castellan, yet little else is known about him beyond this single historical reference. His name remains part of the site's story despite the scarcity of records about his actual tenure.
