Burg Neuenahr

Burg Neuenahr is a fortified castle in Bad Neuenahr built with strong stone walls and defensive towers positioned on elevated ground above the town. The complex includes multiple buildings, gatehouses, and is surrounded by well-preserved exterior walls.

The castle was founded in the early 12th century as part of a regional defense network in the Rhineland-Palatinate area. In 1246 it came under the influence of the Archbishopric of Cologne and maintained this connection for an extended period.

The castle displays features of medieval military architecture with elements like the gatehouse and multiple towers that still shape its appearance today. Visitors can directly experience these details while exploring and understand how the defensive structure was organized.

The castle can be reached from Bad Neuenahr via marked hiking trails from the town center and nearby transport stations. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and allow time for the climb to the elevated location.

A lesser-known detail is the chamber of a former bishop still found within one of the main buildings of the complex. This feature shows the close link between military defense and ecclesiastical authority that once converged at this location.
