Burg Kallenberg

Burg Kallenberg is a castle ruin on elevated terrain near the Danube River with views across multiple valley regions. The Bergfried tower still stands prominently, and the stone walls display the typical layout of a medieval defensive structure with gateway and fortification elements.

The castle was built in the 12th century in the territory of the Grafschaft Oberhohenberg following the division of Zollern County. It served as a fortification to control the Danube region and protect the borders of the ruling territory at that time.

The entrance portal displays Gothic features typical of medieval fortifications in this region. The stonework reveals building traditions shaped by generations of local craftsmen who worked on such structures.

The ruins are reachable from Buchheim via marked hiking trails, and parking is available in the village for visitors. The best time to explore is during good weather, as the path can be steep and the ruins sit on elevated ground.

Local legends speak of a white lady known as a guardian spirit of the Danube valley who lives in the memory of local people. This legendary figure has surrounded the castle in oral traditions across the centuries.
