Bürgerturm, Steel observation tower in Gotha, Germany.
The Bürgerturm is a steel observation tower in Gotha with three viewing platforms positioned at different heights. The structure is supported by three steel columns and provides panoramic views over the city and surrounding landscape from the top.
The tower opened in 2009, replacing an earlier structure from 1830 that deteriorated after World War II and was demolished in 1972. This new steel construction was built as a modern solution for an important site in Gotha.
The name reflects citizen involvement, as thirteen local residents founded the tower association in 1998 to plan and build this structure. The community's role remains visible today through the names of donors marked on the steps.
The climb involves 158 steps that are accessible at any time, with each step named after a project donor. A voluntary contribution of 50 cents helps with tower maintenance.
On clear days, the Brocken mountain roughly 90 kilometers away is visible from the highest viewing platform. This distant view reveals how Gotha sits within its broader regional landscape.
