Garz Castle, Medieval Slavic fortress in Garz, Germany.
Garz Castle is an oval-shaped earthwork fortification measuring around 200 meters long and 140 meters wide, with a single entrance on its western side. The structure was built by piling up earth and its outline remains largely visible today.
The fortress was called Borgar Gardz in the 12th century and served as a defensive stronghold during conflicts in the region. It was an important location for Slavic inhabitants who needed to protect themselves against threats.
The remains hold pottery and metal objects from Slavic times, offering glimpses into daily life in medieval settlements. Visitors can see these finds in the nearby museum and learn more about the people who once lived here.
The site is freely accessible and easy to reach on foot, with a clear path up to the top. A nearby museum offers information about archaeological discoveries and regional history for those wanting to learn more.
From the hilltop, you can see Garzer Lake, and a World War I memorial stands on the grounds. These two elements connect the early medieval past of the place with later chapters of European history.
