Hünenburg

Hünenburg is a medieval castle ruin on Königsberg hill near Bad Pyrmont, built from stone with a residential tower and notably thick defensive walls. The remains show the typical layout of a medieval fortification with protective features.

The castle was built between 1100 and the late 12th century and reflects the early medieval settlement history of the region. Excavation and study of the site only began in the 20th century.

The site draws visitors seeking a tangible connection to medieval life, while the visible walls and towers speak to the craftsmanship of those who built them. The castle embodies how people of the early 20th century projected their own era's interpretation onto historical stones.

The ruins are located in a residential area of Bad Pyrmont-Oesdorf accessible via Oesbergstraße 33, where parking is available nearby. The site is well marked and provides good views of the fortification layout.

Excavations uncovered everyday objects that reveal the daily lives of castle inhabitants, including knives, horseshoes, nails, and sickles. These finds offer a rare glimpse into the material conditions of early medieval life.
