Gimborn Castle, Medieval castle in Marienheide, Germany
Gimborn Castle is a water castle set in the upper Leppe valley, surrounded by moats and stone walls. The building is made of quarried stone with fortified towers and a courtyard enclosed by water channels.
The castle was built in 1273 and passed through the hands of several noble families over the centuries, including the House of Schwarzenberg in the 1600s. It has been in the care of the Barons von Fürstenberg since 1874.
A shooting festival takes place on the castle grounds each year, drawing people from the surrounding villages. This kind of gathering is a long-standing tradition in this part of the Bergisches Land region.
The castle now operates as a conference center, so public access is limited outside of organized events. Checking for scheduled gatherings or the annual festival in advance is the best way to visit the grounds.
Although the castle dates to 1273, much of its current appearance came from rebuilding work done in the 16th and 17th centuries. A plain medieval fortress was gradually turned into a manor-style residence while keeping its water defenses.
