Seckbacher Ried, Nature reserve in Frankfurt, Germany
Seckbacher Ried is a nature reserve in Frankfurt featuring wet meadows, silver willow forests, and drainage channels. The site developed along a former loop of the Main River and now offers a diverse habitat within the densely built urban area.
The area received protection status in 1937 when open meadows with pollarded willows lined the drainage ditches. Over the course of the 20th century, vegetation gradually developed into the silver willow forests visible today.
The name refers to the wetland character that once dominated this area more broadly. Today visitors can observe how these wet habitats attract birds and other animals that are otherwise difficult to find in the urban landscape.
The reserve is accessible by RMV bus 44, which stops at Leonhardsgasse station and provides a convenient starting point. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground can be wet or muddy depending on the season.
Since 1997 the meadows have been maintained by Zebu cattle, whose small hooves avoid damage to the sensitive wet grassland. These cattle were specifically selected for this grazing role and their presence shapes the character of the reserve today.
