Heilig Geist, Frankfurt, Parish church in Riederwald, Frankfurt, Germany
Heilig Geist is a concrete parish church in Frankfurt-Ost distinguished by its modern architectural approach and restrained design. The building features striking portal reliefs that provide visual interest to its otherwise simplified form.
Construction began in 1923 following architect Martin Weber's design, fulfilling the need for a new parish church in Frankfurt-Ost. Bishop Antonius Hilfrich consecrated the completed building in 1931.
Two artistic reliefs by sculptor Arnold Hensler decorate the entrance portals: 'Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit' faces north and 'Pentecost' faces south. These works shape how people experience arriving at the church.
The church stands in a regular residential neighborhood and is easy to identify from the street. Visitors should remember this is an active place of worship and approach it with appropriate respect.
Architect Martin Weber diverged from his typical monumental style with this church, choosing instead a more subdued approach to design. This shift reveals an evolving direction in his architectural thinking during the early 1930s.
