Schafstein, Mountain summit in Hesse, Germany
The Schafstein rises to an elevation of 831.8 meters in the Rhön region, featuring the largest basalt block field in the area.
The mountain and its surrounding territory received nature reserve status in 1930, marking its integration into the Rhön biosphere reserve system.
Local hiking trails connect to natural landmarks including ancient beech trees, estimated to be over 150 years old, within the protected forest landscape.
Visitors can select from multiple trail options, including the 5.82-kilometer Die Bank vom Schafstein loop and the 20.5-kilometer Guckaisee-Gersfeld path.
The summit presents geological formations of basalt columns that demonstrate natural cooling processes, creating distinct horizontal and angular patterns.
