St. Anna Schwerin, Catholic provost church in Schwerin, Germany

St. Anna is a Catholic provost church in Schwerin featuring Neoclassical architecture and serving as the primary religious center for the Mecklenburg region. The building displays a structured facade and houses original furnishings including the pulpit, organ, confessionals, and baptismal font.

Construction began in 1791 under master mason Cornelius Christopher Barca and the church was consecrated in 1795. The building underwent major renovations in 1984 and 1985 to address structural damage from the marshy ground beneath it.

The church was named after a small Gothic statue of Saint Anne that was given to the congregation before construction began. This gift shaped the identity of the place from its founding.

The interior is divided into different levels, with the altar and main furnishings located in the lower church section. Visitors should know the building sits on marshy ground, which means it has a solid foundation, but lighting and sound conditions may vary depending on the time of day.

The Gothic statue of Saint Anne that inspired the church's name existed before construction even began. This early connection between the gift and the building makes it a landmark with a distinctly personal origin story.
