Altes Palais, Palace at Old Garden, Schwerin, Germany

Altes Palais is a palace building with a timber-framed structure, two stories, and a hipped roof accented by large mansard gables with dormers. The structure sits at the intersection of Schlossstrasse and Old Garden and now functions as part of a larger administrative complex.

Construction of the palace began in 1790 and it served as a residence for Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig and Helena Pawlowna from 1799 to 1819. The building was later repurposed for administrative functions that continue to define its role today.

The building is part of the Schwerin Residence Ensemble and demonstrates how ducal architecture evolved in northern Germany. Visitors can observe this development in the varied architectural details throughout the complex.

The building is easy to locate at the corner of Schlossstrasse and Old Garden and can be viewed from the outside. Visitors should be aware that the site functions as an administrative headquarters today, so interior access is limited.

In 1837, architect Georg Adolf Demmler connected the palace to the neighboring house through an archway, creating an integrated architectural ensemble. This connection was innovative for the period and shows how Demmler skillfully unified separate structures.
