Alter Garten

Alter Garten is a rectangular public square in Schwerin that stretches between Burgsee Lake and Schweriner See, serving as a central gathering point. The space is framed by significant buildings including the State Theater and State Museum, which define its character.

The square originated in the 16th century when Duke Johann Albrecht transformed the area from a stud farm with racetrack into cultivated gardens. This transformation shaped how the space has been used since then.

The square hosts open-air performances during summer months, where theater and music productions take place directly in the space. Locals and visitors gather here regularly for concerts and cultural events that shape daily activity.

The square is easy to reach on foot and sits centrally in the city with good public transport connections. From here, visitors can walk to nearby castles and museums or board boats for tours of the surrounding lakes.

An old Victory Column stands among century-old linden trees in the southwestern section and marks historical moments. This monumental statue is often overlooked, though it creates a quiet place for reflection.
