Alter Garten, Historic square at Castle Island, Schwerin, Germany
The rectangular square stretches 200 meters by 100 meters between Burgsee Lake and Schwerin Lake, forming a central gathering point in the city.
During the reign of Duke Johann Albrecht in 1556, the area transformed from a stud farm with a racetrack into gardens, leading to its name Alter Garten.
The square hosts the annual Schlossfestspiele performances and connects the State Theater, State Museum, and Schwerin Castle through pedestrian paths.
Visitors can access guided city tours, boat excursions, and various transportation options directly from the square's central location.
The Victory Column stands among old linden trees in the southwestern section, while the northeastern end features the museum's grand staircase.
