Theikenmeer, Protected nature reserve in Werlte, Germany.
The Theikenmeer is a protected nature reserve between Werlte and Sögel featuring wetlands, forests, and grasslands spread across roughly 290 hectares. Its varied habitats and water features support a diverse ecosystem with many different types of plant and animal life.
The area suffered severe damage in the early 1980s when drainage and agricultural pollution destroyed its habitats. Restoration efforts then began to rebuild the wetland and recover its natural diversity.
The Nature and Geopark Station displays exhibits in a converted farm building that explain how the landscape and its living creatures are connected. Visitors gain insight into the ecological relationships that shape the region.
The reserve is accessible through two marked hiking trails: a longer circular route with information stations and a shorter path to viewing areas. Wear sturdy footwear and stay on marked paths to protect the fragile habitats.
The reserve is home to rare plants like round-leaved sundew and cotton grass that nearly vanished from the region. It also shelters dragonflies and snakes that can only survive in these boggy wetlands.
