Peißnitzinsel, River island in Halle (Saale), Germany
Peißnitzinsel is a river island approximately 1.2 kilometers long situated between the main Saale River and one of its tributaries, characterized by riverside woodlands and open meadows. Multiple paths cross the island, creating spaces for walking, recreation, and outdoor activities of various kinds.
The island was first documented in the 7th century when it was already inhabited. During medieval times it was part of the Kloster Neuwerk monastery before passing to the city of Halle in 1540.
A playground in the center was designed and built by students from Ufa, Bashkortostan, featuring artistic elements from their region that represent the partnership between both cities.
The island is accessible via the Bridge of Friendship and can be explored on foot or by the Peißnitz Express train. Wear comfortable shoes as paths vary in condition and weather can affect ground surfaces.
Each August the island transforms during the Lantern Festival when thousands of illuminated displays turn the entire space into a glowing landscape. The car-free nature of the island is preserved, creating a special experience for evening walks.
