Straberg-Nievenheimer See, lake in Dormagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
The Straberg-Nievenheimer See is a large body of water and an excavation lake near Dormagen that has become a popular bathing destination. The shoreline features expansive grassy areas, an extensive sandy beach area called Strabeach, and shallow water close to shore that is suitable for beginners and children.
The lake was created through gravel extraction and later converted into a public bathing spot, evolving over the years into an important recreational destination for Dormagen and the surrounding area. This transformation shows how urban spaces can be revitalized after their original industrial use.
The lake takes its name from the two neighborhoods that border it, Straberg and Nievenheim. It serves as a gathering place for the local community, particularly during warmer months when families and friends spend their leisure time here.
The area is easy to reach by car and has parking options nearby for convenient visits. Free restrooms, changing cabins, and outdoor showers are available, and during the warm months from May to August there are snack bars with food, ice cream, and drinks.
The site hosts several specialized water sports offerings including a wakeboarding system with nearly 600 meters of cable at Wakebeach 257 and paddleboard yoga classes on the water. A large local sailing club with nearly 900 members operates one of the largest sailing schools in the region.
