Rietburg, Medieval castle ruin in Rhodt unter Rietburg, Germany
Rietburg is a castle ruin located on a mountainside in the Haardt range and visible from the valley below. The remains still show the structure of the original fortress with different rooms and walls that have partially collapsed over the decades.
The fortress was founded in the early 13th century by local lords who took orders from an abbey in Alsace. Over time the castle lost importance and was eventually abandoned, leaving only ruins today.
The ruins show how people lived in the region centuries ago and what power the nobles held here. Walking through the rooms today gives visitors a sense of how this place shaped life for its inhabitants.
A cable car system brings visitors directly from the valley up to the ruins, making the ascent easier. You can also walk up on foot if you prefer to hike and explore the surrounding area.
The cable car to the castle was built in 1954 and is one of the few transport systems that makes a historic site directly accessible. The system still operates today and shows how modern infrastructure was connected to an old place.
