Ludwigs Tower, Observation tower on Blättersberg hill in Rhodt unter Rietburg, Germany.
Ludwigs Tower is a sandstone structure on Blättersberg hill, standing about 50 feet (15 meters) tall with a square base and viewing platforms at different levels. The layered stone construction allows visitors to climb through multiple heights and view the surroundings from different perspectives.
The tower was built in 1889 to honor a Bavarian king and was meant to offer views of the Rhine plain. At that time the vista was more open before dense tree growth eventually changed the panorama.
The tower is named after a Bavarian king and has shaped the regional landscape as a landmark for generations. Hikers recognize it from afar and use it as a navigation point during their walks through the hills.
The tower is reachable via several marked hiking trails, including the Ludwigsturm-Rietburg loop and paths from nearby villages. Best to climb on stable shoes, especially when the steps are wet after rain.
The tower sits within a cross-border biosphere reserve between Germany and France that connects two nature protection areas. Its location on this ridge makes it an interesting point for observing birds and migrating animal species.
