Fort Berge, Military fortress in Magdeburg, Germany.
Fort Berge was a fortification in Magdeburg featuring a distinctive four-pointed star shape, reinforced by multiple ramparts and moats for defensive purposes. The structure dominated the urban landscape until its demolition in the early 1900s.
Construction began in 1721 under Gerhard Cornelius Walrave and took its name from a nearby monastery. The fortification shaped Magdeburg's military and urban development for nearly 180 years.
The place carries forward the name of the former fortification, which served multiple purposes throughout its life and whose significance remains part of Magdeburg's identity. The surrounding street names echo the distinctive star shape that once defined the site.
The historic site can be located today through street names like Sternstraße and Sternbrücke, which reflect the original layout. Visiting is possible at any time since the location is part of the modern city and remains freely accessible.
The architect Walrave later became a prisoner within the structure he had designed and was given a specific area for his movement inside. This surprising turn shows the complex history of the site and its use across different periods.
