Ohligser Heide, Nature reserve in Solingen, Germany
Ohligser Heide is a nature reserve in Solingen featuring a mix of wet heathland, moor areas, swamp forests, natural streams, reed beds, and oak-birch woodlands across rolling terrain. The varied landscape supports different plant and animal communities throughout the grounds.
The site received protected status in 1936 and official nature conservation designation in 1952. Later expansions in 1987 and 2004 extended the reserve to its current size.
The land has been shaped by sheep and goats since 2014, which graze openly to keep vegetation from becoming overgrown. Visitors walking through will regularly see these animals at work and understand how traditional grazing maintains the open landscape.
The reserve has a network of clearly marked walking paths that are easy to follow throughout the grounds. The gentle terrain makes it accessible for visitors of different fitness levels without requiring special equipment or climbing.
Rare plants such as round-leaved sundew and lung gentian grow here, species that thrive only under specific wetland conditions. The area is home to dragonflies specially adapted to heathland and marsh environments.
