Galileum Solingen, Astronomical observatory and planetarium in Solingen, Germany
Galileum Solingen combines an observatory with modern telescopes and a planetarium housed under a 12-meter dome. Inside the planetarium, a GOTO Chronos II Hybrid projector displays the universe in realistic detail.
The facility opened in 2019 and brought modern astronomical education to the North Rhine-Westphalia region. It grew from the dedication of a local astronomy society.
The facility is run by the Walter-Horn-Gesellschaft and offers regular talks and courses that help visitors understand the sky better.
The observatory requires clear skies for viewing through telescopes, whereas the planetarium can operate any day regardless of weather. It helps to check weather conditions beforehand if telescope observation matters to your visit.
The telescope features a mirror with 356 millimeters diameter, capturing fine details in the sky with remarkable clarity. The planetarium also projects over 8,500 stars, making the night sky appear almost as it looks to the naked eye.
