Friedenskirche, Baroque church in Saarbrücken, Germany
The Friedenskirche is a Baroque church in Saarbrücken featuring a cross-shaped floor plan topped by a distinctive tower. Its design reflects 18th-century German Protestant architectural principles with a carefully balanced composition of walls and roof forms.
Architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel designed and built the church between 1743 and 1751. The construction was funded by generous donations from Prince Wilhelm Heinrich along with collections gathered from England and Holland.
The building has welcomed different faith communities over its lifetime, including Reformed Protestants, Old Catholics, and Russian Orthodox believers, each adapting the interior to suit their worship practices.
The church stands on Wilhelm-Heinrich-Straße in central Saarbrücken and is easily reached on foot. Extensive technical modernization and renovations both inside and outside were completed between 2016 and 2017 to maintain the building's condition.
The building underwent profound functional changes throughout its history, far beyond its original purpose. During the French Revolution it served as a Temple of Virtue, later as a gymnasium, before eventually being restored to religious use.
