Memorial Wolffenbüttel Prison

Memorial Wolffenbüttel Prison is a former detention facility that served as an execution site between 1937 and 1945. The walls display names of the victims illuminated as a permanent record of those who died here.

The building was constructed in 1790 from the remnants of a 16th-century fortress. It became a central execution facility during the Nazi regime, transforming its original purpose entirely.

The site reveals how the state corrupted justice and persecuted people based on their beliefs. Visitors encounter personal belongings and read accounts from those held here during persecution.

Visits require advance registration and guided tours are available in German and English for groups of 5 or more. It is advisable to check opening hours beforehand and allow sufficient time to process the difficult subject matter.

The LED lighting of the names creates the silhouette of a guillotine in the center of the wall display. This element connects modern technology with the method of historical executions in a deliberate way.
