Wolfenbüttel, Urban municipality in Lower Saxony, Germany.
Wolfenbüttel is a district capital in Lower Saxony on the Oker River, located around 13 kilometers south of Brunswick. The streets in the historic core show rows of timber-framed houses that shape the townscape and remain well maintained.
The settlement began in the tenth century around a water castle on a trade route between Brunswick and Halberstadt. Over the centuries the site became the residence of dukes who established the library and commissioned buildings.
The town takes its name from an old noble seat and visitors see the well-kept facades of timber houses throughout the center today. People live and work in these restored buildings, which combine residential use with public functions in everyday life.
The old town center can be explored on foot and most sights lie close together. Visitors find signposts at the main buildings and orientation in the center proves easy.
The local distillery has produced a well-known herbal liqueur here for decades and distributes it worldwide. The operation shapes the local economy and many residents work in production or administration for the company.
