Südliche Fröttmaninger Heide, Protected area in northern Munich, Germany
The Südliche Fröttmaninger Heide is a protected nature reserve north of Munich featuring grasslands, heathland, and pine forests. The terrain appears as a mosaic of open meadows, shallow ponds, and forested areas with numerous clearings.
The land served as a military training ground from the mid-19th century under German forces and later the US Army. After gradual abandonment of military use, the area transformed into a nature conservation zone.
The reserve hosts rare plant species from different regions that grow in the meadows and forest clearings. This variety of life makes the place an important habitat for specialized plants found across the region.
Visitors must stay on marked paths and follow different leashing rules for dogs depending on the protection zone. Colored markings indicate which regulations apply in each area.
From the reserve you can see the Allianz Arena while walking through one of Central Europe's largest continuous heathland areas. This contrast between nature and modern structure is rarely found in the region.
