Klusfelsen, Natural rock formation in Goslar, Germany

The Klusfelsen rises 20 meters high and extends 50 meters in length, featuring vertical sandstone layers formed during the Lower Cretaceous period.

In 1167, a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary was established within a natural cave of the rock, serving as a religious site until the Reformation period.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the Klusfelsen on September 2, 1784, during his third journey to the Harz region with artist Georg Melchior Kraus.

The rock formation stands under protection, prohibiting visitors from climbing the structure or collecting rock samples from the site.

The sandstone layers of Klusfelsen stand vertically due to tectonic movements during the Early Tertiary period, revealing distinct geological patterns.
