Marktkirche St. Cosmas und Damian

Marktkirche St. Cosmas und Damian is a Romanesque church in Goslar's center with a cross-shaped floor plan, two sturdy western towers, and an expanded choir section. The building has side aisles supported by thick walls and stone pillars that create its interior structure.

The building first appears in written records in 1151, showing how long it has been part of Goslar's landscape. In the 14th and 15th centuries it underwent major changes that expanded its choir and added side aisles to its layout.

The church shapes how Goslar's marketplace looks and feels through its two western towers that stand out above the surrounding buildings. The nine medieval stained glass windows from the 13th century show scenes from the lives of Saints Cosmas and Damian and create the quality of light inside.

Three bells from 1848 hang in the northern tower, with the largest one named Johanna and weighing about 7 tons. This bell shows the skill of metalworkers from that era and adds another dimension to visiting the church.
