Giesener Teiche, Nature reserve in Hildesheim, Germany
Giesener Teiche is a protected nature reserve in Hildesheim featuring two ponds, reed zones, sedge marshes, and wet meadows that spread across the landscape near the Innerste River. The terrain sits on red claystone with gypsum formations and covers about 17 hectares total.
The two ponds were constructed in the late 1700s by the episcopal estate for fish farming purposes and continue to shape the landscape. Over time, the area became protected to safeguard the plants and animals now living there.
The area forms part of a nature experience complex where visitors walk through reed zones and wet meadows that reveal different habitats. Local school groups and nature enthusiasts regularly use the marked paths to observe the landscape.
The reserve is located between Himmelsthür and Giesen in northern Hildesheim with multiple entry points and clearly marked trails throughout. Visitors can easily explore different habitats on foot and find good spots for observing wildlife along the paths.
The reserve is home to rare species like the Narrow Coiled Snail and Crested Newt that thrive in this specific environment. These creatures are hard to spot but their presence makes the place a special refuge worth exploring.
