Magdalenenkirche

Magdalenenkirche is a three-nave hall church with a rectangular choir and baroque portals from the 17th and 18th centuries that shape the city's appearance. Its interior contains elements from several building styles, clearly showing the long development of the structure.

Founded in 1224 by Bishop Konrad II, the church became the first Gothic building in Hildesheim. Its consecration took place in 1294, marking the start of a new architectural direction in the region.

The church is named after Mary Magdalene, and its interior displays the craftsmanship of artisans from different periods. Visitors come to pray before the remarkable Gothic altar and witness the religious artistry that defines this house of worship.

The building is easily reached on foot and can be found from the old town, with clear views of the baroque portals on the facade. Visitors should plan some time to examine the interior details closely and appreciate the artistic works.

The interior houses a silver shrine from 1750 containing relics of Saint Bernward, depicting him in episcopal garments alongside angels. This skillful work is a rare example of religious devotion from several centuries ago in this region.
