Gleichberge, Hill group near Römhild, Germany
Gleichberge is a hill group near Römhild in southwestern Thuringia with two main peaks rising from the surrounding terrain. The tallest peak reaches about 680 meters, and both summits expose dark volcanic rock from their slopes.
These hills formed through volcanic activity during the Tertiary period, creating the dark basalt formations visible today. The volcanic origin shaped their steep slopes and distinct character in the regional landscape.
The mountain range contains several historic stone quarries, including the Römhild quarry, which operated from 1901 to 1968 and left visible structures.
The hills are accessible year-round for hiking, with warmer months offering the most comfortable walking conditions. Trails depart from nearby Römhild and lead to both peaks, making the area easy to explore on foot.
Until 1991, a military installation with Soviet radar and radio equipment occupied the summit of the higher peak, making these hills off-limits for decades. Today visitors can freely reach and explore both peaks without restrictions.
