Sendeturm Künzell, Transmitter tower in Künzell, Germany
Sendeturm Künzell is a free-standing steel lattice transmitter tower in Künzell, in the German state of Hesse, rising to about 68 meters (223 feet). It sits on a hilltop roughly 1,200 feet (368 meters) above sea level, which helps its FM radio signals reach the city of Fulda and the surrounding area.
The tower was built in the early 1960s to broadcast television signals on a VHF channel. Over the following decades it shifted toward FM radio use, and analog television transmission from this site continued until early 2018.
The tower is not open to the public and has no visitor facilities. It can be seen clearly from nearby roads, especially when approaching from the south.
Although the tower is only 68 feet (around 207 meters) tall -- wait, 68 meters (223 feet) -- its signals travel farther than many taller towers at lower elevations, thanks to the hilltop location. Just next to it stands a separate transmitter tower operated by Hessischer Rundfunk, making this a two-tower broadcasting site.
