Grube Anna, Coal mine complex in Alsdorf, Germany
Grube Anna was a hard coal mine in the Aachen region that extracted seams lying far beneath the area around Alsdorf. The operation included several shafts and infrastructure for hauling and processing the extracted material.
Operations began in the middle of the 1800s and it became the largest employer in the region. After decades of work, operations wound down and the mine closed near the end of the 1900s.
The place takes its name from the mine that shaped people's lives here for generations. Today, memorials and street names recall the coal workers who defined this area.
The site and its history can be explored along various paths today, as parts of it have been opened to visitors. The best time to visit is during dry weather, as some areas may be prone to water issues.
The mine hosted a remarkable collection of geological materials including minerals that are seldom found elsewhere. Scientists were able to study substances of great interest to mineralogy in a setting rarely available.
