Gymnasium Leopoldinum, Secondary school in Detmold, Germany
Gymnasium Leopoldinum is a public secondary school in Detmold, located along Hornsche Street in the center of the city. It occupies a historic main building alongside newer wings used for science, language, and arts classes.
The school was founded in 1602 by Count Simon VI of Lippe and first housed in a former monastery. Over the following centuries it moved to its current site on Hornsche Street and gradually expanded its buildings.
The school takes its name from Saint Leopold and has shaped the educational life of Detmold for generations. Students from across the region have passed through its doors, making it a familiar landmark in the city.
The school grounds on Hornsche Street are easy to reach on foot from Detmold city center. The historic building is visible from the street, so you can get a clear look at the exterior without entering the campus.
Agnes von Sobbe passed her Abitur here in 1907, becoming the first woman in Lippe to do so at this school. At the time, it was rare for a woman to sit this exam at a school with such a long male-only tradition.
