H2O is a water park in Herford with a sports pool, a wave pool, water slides, a sauna section, and a warm area for babies and toddlers. The different zones are all housed together, covering swimming, family fun, and wellness in one place.
The site's predecessor was the Otto-Weddigen-Bad, a heated outdoor pool opened on 23 June 1935 and named after Herford-born U-boat commander Otto Weddigen. It closed on 10 September 1994. Construction of the H2O began before the old indoor pool on Hansastraße shut in June 1997, and the new leisure pool opened that October, operated by Stadtwerke Herford.
Tabokiri, the jungle island inside the park, turns learning to swim into a playful experience for children. Families from the region use this space regularly as a day out on weekends and school holidays.
The park has several zones with different water temperatures, so it helps to know in advance which area suits your group best. Weekends and school holidays tend to be busier, so a weekday visit usually means more space.
The sauna garden holds twelve saunas at 45 to 100 °C, among them the Vesitorni sauna with a film panorama and the Vaikutus event sauna seating nearly 100 people. Since October 2019 the Lumikide snow cabin at −12 °C provides the cold contrast. Tuesdays are women-only sauna days.
