Hanielgarage

Hanielgarage is a four-story car park in Düsseldorf-Flingern wrapped entirely in glass and featuring cantilevered concrete ramps on its exterior. The structure originally held around 500 parking spaces alongside a motel and restaurant within the same building.

The building was constructed in 1951 under architect Paul Schneider von Esleben as Germany's first multistorey car park. Following a major renovation during the 1990s, it was repurposed as a BMW dealership.

The location shows how German cities embraced car culture after the war, blending practical parking with hospitality spaces. This mix of garage, motel, and restaurant reflected a shift in how people traveled and spent their time in the 1950s.

You can best explore the building from the outside to see the glass facade and concrete structure in detail. Access and visiting conditions depend on the current use as a BMW dealership.

The glass shell lets you see parked cars inside from the street, revealing the mechanical process in an unusual way. This transparency was an intentional design choice that showed off the functional approach of 1950s architecture.
