Pälzer Weltachs, Rock formation near Waldleiningen, Germany
Pälzer Weltachs is a sandstone rock formation located on Kleiner Roßrück mountain at about 459 meters elevation in the Palatinate region. The formation features a carved relief and can be accessed via hiking trails that wind through the surrounding forest.
A pillar-shaped surveying marker was built on Kleiner Roßrück by Bavarian authorities in the 19th century. This original surveying structure eventually received the carved relief that defines the site today.
The rock displays an inscription and relief showing the "lubrication of the world axis" concept. This references a dialect poem that playfully celebrates the Palatinate's importance in a lighthearted way.
The rock is accessible only by foot along designated hiking trails, as there is no direct vehicle access. The trails pass through forested terrain and offer a moderate walking experience.
Locals perform an annual oiling ceremony at the rock that combines regional poetry with playful tradition. This yearly ritual keeps the region's quirky cultural heritage alive.
