U-11, Naval museum with submarine in Burgstaaken, Germany
U-11 is a German Type 205 submarine preserved as a floating museum in Burgstaaken. The boat displays its original equipment, machinery, and crew spaces from its operational years, which visitors can explore.
The boat was built between 1966 and 1968 in Kiel and spent many years at sea afterward. It served the German Navy during an important period of European history.
The vessel bears the name of a historic submarine class and shows how sailors lived and worked in tight quarters. You can see what daily life on board looked like and understand the role such boats played during the Cold War.
The museum is accessed via a walkway and you can explore the entire boat from top to bottom. If you find confined spaces or stairs challenging, check in advance which areas are accessible.
At few places in the world can you visit a real Cold War submarine from inside and realize how cramped underwater life truly was. The tiny sleeping spaces and tight equipment layout show what sailors had to endure daily.
