Heidenschanze

Heidenschanze is a castle ruin in Dresden-Coschutz situated on high ground with visible stone remains of a medieval fortification. The foundations and earthworks show the original layout of a defensive structure that once overlooked the Elbe valley.

The fortification began as a Slavic stronghold and was later integrated into the medieval defense system under Saxon rulers. Over the centuries it lost its military purpose and declined into the ruined state visible today.

The site takes its name from a Slavic fortification, and information panels show traces of ancient walls and ditches in the ground plan. Visitors can still see the landscape shapes that medieval builders created.

The site is accessible via several marked hiking trails that wind through the hills around Coschutz. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground surfaces are uneven and can be slippery after rain.

A network of hiking trails connects the ruin to fertile slopes where traditional fruit varieties are grown by local farmers. These heritage crops have shaped the surrounding landscape for generations.
